I have read and enjoyed all the John Carson Scottish crime novels except this one. When you mention the phrase “what would you do if it was our last day together?” More than once it’s pretty much a give away that Alex would not be reprising her role next book. No points for plot subtlety there. Hackneyed more like.In addition the character Calvin Stewart is a hideous reminder of brutality policemen are capable of....and his colleagues say and do nothing. Not remotely funny. This was made worse by the authors afterword indicating that loved or hated he has the deciding vote so he is keeping him around. In the current climate good policemen are struggling not to be labeled pigs again whether one reads this in New York New Jersey or Scotland the book isn’t doing police or their work any favors.
