Gabriel Krauze's Who They Was is an intimate portrayal of life from the perspective of the one who lives to tell the story of those who can't. Set in a London rarely portrayed in popular fiction or on TV Shows, this is the London of Snoopz' formative years. This London is gritty-- a world where everyday decisions have life-or-death consequences. Written in a voice-driven, autobiographical novel style, Who They Was, takes you through Snoopz' life--all of the characters that come into and out of his life, the things people in the community do to survive, and how life goes on, with or without you.The novel follows a pretty linear format and is written in various vernaculars. It's not a simple read. (Not for a typical US-based reader anyhow.) There are a lot of names that come in and out. A few that remain. There's a lot of words that you don't come to know till closer towards the end of the novel. And other terms you have to guess at. The first fifty pages are a challenge, but by 75 to 100, you know the names you need to know. You start understanding this world that is an amalgamation of Caribbean and poor white realities.The moments I enjoyed the most were the bits of self-reflection when Gabriel, or Snoopz, starts seeing the world for what it is and starts to recognize his own morality. Without giving too much away, the scenes towards the last third of the book, resonate loudly. (You'll see why.) I appreciate that this story was written in an autobiographical novel format--I think if the book had been self-referential, the narrative would have slowed down. To that end, that's my biggest criticism of the book--it's about 75 pages too long.Nonetheless, Krauze is a wonderful novelist. A truly inventive story-teller and one of the best voice novelists I've read in years. Like Mitchell Jackson's Residue Years, he knows how to tell a story and how to really challenge his readers. I'm really looking forward to reading more of him
